Membership is open to all people who share a confession of Christian faith.
You may become a member through: Holy Baptism, Affirmation of Baptism, or Transfer of Membership (includes Affirmation of Baptism)
Infant baptism is practiced in our tradition, in accordance with the practice of the Christian Church since its beginning. Baptism takes place in the midst of the worshiping congregation and the child is welcomed into membership with the promises of God and those present to aid and assist the parents in the spiritual growth of the child.
Adult baptism is the means by which unbaptized people enter the Church. Older children and adults will spend time with the Pastor learning about the faith in which s/he will be baptized. Our church recognizes all Christian baptisms which have been performed in the name of the triune God and, therefore, does not re-baptize those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition.
A two-year program of instruction in the Christian faith normally begins in 7th grade, culminating with a public declaration of faith at the end of the 8th grade year. At that time, confirmands are recognized as voting members of the Church with full responsibilities and privileges. If young people join Bethany later than 8th grade who have previously not had the opportunity to publicly affirm his or her faith and would like to, opportunities will be made available on an individual basis with support and guidance from the Pastor.
Those with previous Christian church experience are asked to review the basic teachings of the Christian faith and to gain knowledge of the history of the Lutheran Church and its teachings. We find that the most useful way to do this is through regular participation in worship and activities of the congregation and by conversation the Pastor and other faithful members at Bethany. Adult Affirmation of Baptism is typically made when the congregation welcomes new members during Sunday morning worship. However, if any adult wishes to make public affirmation of his or her faith, opportunities will be made on an individual basis with support and guidance from the Pastor.
If you are transferring membership from another congregation, please send a Letter of Transfer to both your former congregation and Bethany, simply stating that you are transferring membership from your former congregation to Bethany.
If you are interested in membership, please notify Pastor Melba Dibble.
Official Acceptance into membership occurs when the Church Office receives notification of transfer or other means of membership and records your name in the official records of the church.
Formal Acceptance into membership is celebrated during a Sunday morning worship service, when public affirmation of faith is made along with the congregation.
Associate Members are those who, due to work or family commitments may only attend Bethany for periods of time. Associate Members may hold membership at another, primary parish, and can participate fully in the life of the church with the exception of voting and the privilege of serving on Congregational Council.
If you would like additional information about baptism, confirmation, adult instruction, or transfer of your membership, please contact the church office.
